Dyslexia and Foreign Language Teaching #FLdyslexia Week 4

I’ve just completed the final week of the FutureLearn MOOC, Dyslexia and Foreign Language Teaching. A little early but I wanted to get it done as I need to concentrate on report writing 🙁
This week focussed on phonological and orthographic awareness, skills that are needed for successful spelling, reading and comprehension. It underlined the need to move from word level to text level, and the value of shared reading, pre-reading/pre-teaching, and of constant checking of comprehension to avoid gaps in understanding being left unplugged.

It was a very helpful course. Quite a large group of language teachers on Twitter/Facebook completed the course and we all felt that it was useful. You can register interest in the next course here – https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/dyslexia (you can actually see the course but won’t get the discussion element unless it’s run as a course which was quite important!) I’m currently doing another FutureLearn course on Gabriel García Márquez and Macondo – they’re great as you can do them when you have a moment rather than being forced to be ready at a certain time, and can replay the videos if you need to listen again.
